2023-2024 Books: 

• October 23: The Seven Good Years by Etgar Keret (available for purchase at the Sisterhood Judaica Shop)
  • The memoir from author Etgar Keret details the seven years between the birth of his son and the death of his father. Though those years were good, there were still reasons to worry— Lev is born in the midst of a terrorist attack and Etgar’s father gets cancer. The threat of constant war looms over their home and permeates daily life.
  • Keret is the author of several books and his work has been translated into 37 languages. Bet Torah is fortunate as Etgar Keret will be speaking at Bet Torah on November 8. Regsister here.
• December 20: The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride (available for purchase at the Sisterhood Judaica Shop)
  • In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighbourhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows.
  • James McBride is a National Book Award-winning, Oprah Book Club-picked, Barack Obama favorite author.  He is a native New Yorker and former staff writer for The Washington Post, People Magazine, and The Boston Globe as well as an award winning musician.
• February 22: Kantika by Elizabeth Graver (available for purchase at the Sisterhood Judaica Shop)
  • A dazzling Sephardic multigenerational saga that moves from Istanbul to Barcelona, Havana, and New York, exploring displacement, endurance, and family as home.
  • Elizabeth Graver's fourth novel, The End of the Point, was long-listed for the 2013 National Book Award and selected as a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Her story collection, Have You Seen Me?, won the 1991 Drue Heinz Literature Prize. Her work has been anthologized in Best American Short Stories, Best American Essays, and Prize Stories, the O. Henry Awards.
